Addiction Tests

Instructions

Each addiction contains 12 symptoms for each test. The more symptoms you check off for a given test, the more severe the problem. Count the total number of boxes checked, and take a look at the list below. If you or your loved one has a problem, or you would like more information about how to proceed or interpret your assessment, please call us immediately. A friendly and caring counselor is waiting for your call. Listed from least to most serious:

  1. Pay Attention.
  2. Pay Close Attention.
  3. BEWARE!!! (Have a serious talk with a friend).
  4. There is an emotional need to continue the process.
  5. There is a psychological need to continue the process.
  6. This is an addiction. (Attend a 12-step meeting i.e. A.A., O.A., etc.)
  7. Seek a professional evaluation with an addiction counselor.
  8. Well into addiction. Self-esteem is likely to be damaged by now.
  9. This addiction is chronic; seek counseling and/or treatment.
  10. Possible loss of “self” at this stage.
  11. Physical symptoms are likely (withdrawal, illness, insomnia, etc.).
  12. Vicious circle; addiction continues to insanity, death, or recovery.

Alcohol Addiction

Are you or someone you know addicted to alcohol?
Check all that apply:

Experience loss of, or possible loss of a job/education
due to drinking.
Drink to build self-confidence.
Drink alone.
Find that drinking affects your/their reputation.
Find that your/their drinking is painful to others.
Feel guilty about drinking.
Crave alcohol at a certain time of day.
Experience legal problems because of drinking.
Attempt to quit drinking without success.
Think about drinking much of the time.
Experience memory loss due to drinking (blackouts).
Have thought like “I may have a problem with alcohol”.

Sex Addiction

Are you or is someone you know addicted to sex?
Check all that apply:

Often feel ashamed over sexual thoughts or behavior.
Never feel totally satisfied or content from sex.
Use sex to fix an argument or make up.
Find that sex is the most important thing in your/their
life.
Engage in sexual behavior that violates others.
Masturbate several times a day.
Feel a sense of power when engaging in sex.
Experience uncontrollable sexual impulses.
Generally view the opposite sex as sex objects.
Have others express concern over their sexual preoccupation.
Attempt to stop/control sexual behavior without success.
Have problems in key areas of your/their life (work,
school, etc.) due to sex.

Food Addiction

Are you or is someone you know addicted to food?
Check all that apply:

Eat to avoid or medicate feelings.
Have self-esteem that is tied into cooking or food.
Keep a supply of food around just in case.
Be grossly overweight.
Feel ashamed of the food intake.
Plan meals further in advance than necessary.
Sneak or hide food.
Usually order or cook more food than is necessary.
Suppress their appetites for only an hour or so by eating.
Blame others for unhealthy eating hobbits.
Generally hold conversations about food.
Have friends or relatives that are concerned about their
food intake.

Work Addiction

Are you or is someone you know addicted to Work?
Check all that apply:

Emotionally or physically abandon others
for work.
Lose sleep or rest over work.
Regularly work through lunch.
Experience difficulty relaxing.
Work to avoid conflict or intimacy.
Work to avoid undesirable feelings.
Become resentful when accomplishments are not recognized.
Forget important tasks or commitments not related to
work.
Constantly think about or talk about work.
Feel that enough is never enough.
Be overly critical of others’ work.
Feel out of control and powerless over having to work.
