Drug Addiction Treatment

November 11th 2008

There are many different kinds of drug addiction treatment. Some have said all kinds of treatment are ineffective, but this is simply not the case. The trick is finding the right treatment option for each individual scenario. Without the right treatment approach, it can be quite easy for an addict to relapse into their old habits and become highly cynical about the world of drug addiction treatment.

Even with the right approach, there is never a 100-percent guarantee of success, as relapse is common among drug addicts. The chances of success are, however, greatly increased, as are the chances that the addict will try rehab again, should a relapse occur.

Aftercare is one highly effective service offered by many drug addiction treatment programs. Basically consisting of ongoing counseling and therapy, aftercare can bolster the addict’s long-term efforts to stay clean after the intensive treatment period has ended.

Some of the basic tenets of successful drug addiction treatment is a loving, non-judgmental approach, a caring and open attitude, goals and expectations, and basic education. Whether it’s social skills, job skills, parenting skills, or drug awareness, education is a key component of long-lasting success. Education, along with personal goals, can give the addict something to work toward, to make them feel in control of their future. Furthermore, it can keep them busy, which helps keep their mind off drugs.

The types of drug addiction treatment vary from outpatient to long-term residential. Treatment can be provided during business hours or around-the-clock. It can be light or intensive, depending on the type and severity of the addiction. They can be in the addict’s neighborhood or some distance away. Again, each situation is unique, so always consult with a drug addiction counselor to determine reputable organizations and appropriate treatment regimens.

About Drug Addiction

November 11th 2008

Drug addiction is a very serious issue facing America today. About 14.8 million people use marijuana, according to the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. About 2.4 million use cocaine, and about 1 million use hallucinogens like ecstacy. Methamphetamine has about 731,000 users, while prescription drugs are used by about 7 million people for non-medical reasons.

Aside from the obvious substances, others can be abused – common, household items such as glue and paint. Experimentation in childhood and the teen years can lead to some pretty severe drug abuse in later years. One can only estimate the social cost of the drug addiction epidemic. Emergency rooms absorb costs from uninsured patients with drug-related injuries, costs which are inevitably factored into the rising healthcare costs passed on to others. Law enforcement officials work to put an end to drug traffic on the streets, only to see offenders released from jail in record time. Families are torn apart by drug addiction and children see their lives ruined, often only to turn around and engage in drug addiction themselves, setting off a vicious cycle.

Nevertheless, addicts are not villains. They should not be regarded with hatred and judgment, because drug addiction is a sad and complex experience. It is different for everyone, with different personalities and circumstances involved in each case. Sometimes there are co-occurring disorders, like depression or anorexia. The addict might use narcotics to dull the pain associated with the disorder, yet it spirals into a drug addiction and winds up aggravating the co-occurring disorder even more. Other causes might be attributed to a family cycle of drug addiction, to the point where that is all a person has ever known. There are certainly opportunities for self-improvement, but some people are simply never shown that path. So while drug addiction is a serious social epidemic, drug addicts should be approached with an open mind. Addictions can make people do bad things, but they are not necessarily bad people. A solution-oriented approach can help drug addicts overcome their addiction and reach their full potential.
